Penny stocks have been around as long as the stock market. They’re the way that grassroots companies get capital to get started, and they’re how some companies who are in a fast decline earn money to pull themselves out of a nosedive. Plenty of major companies whose stocks are worth hundreds of dollars started out with stocks worth less than five dollars a share, and plenty of multi-millionaires started out with a couple hundred dollars to invest in cheap shares.
